It was a very hot day for Bill Glanville and Lyle Bittman as they competed in the Frank Dunn Triathlon at Waskesiu on Aug 8th, 2010. Bill finished the triathlon in 4 hour 5 min while Lyle finished in 4 hour 20 minutes. The lake was calm during the 1500m swim but the lack of wind made the 62 km bike and 13 km run portions very hot. There were a total of 181 individuals or teams which raced the triathlon.Melfort Tri-Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02329330827217205540noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6547106679301508456.post-10196392799107637212010-08-02T21:53:00.000-06:002014-06-16T15:29:14.072-06:00Great White North Triathlon - July 2010
On July 4, 2010, Lyle Bittman competed in the Great White North Triathlon in Stony Plain, AB. He started the swim at 8am sharp in Hubbles Lake along with over 600 other athletes. After two crowded laps he exited the water with a 2km swim time of 39:15. Next up was the 90km bike portion which went better than Lyle was expecting, "it was easy to settle in having so many people around and most of the first 10K down hill", Lyle said. The weather forecast for the race was predicting thunderstorms and for awhile during the bike the skies were pretty black and although the rain stayed away the wind picked up during the bike portion making a couple of the sections a bit more challenging. He finished the bike portion in 3:09:58. The half marathon run course was laid out great on a nice trail through Stony Plain, very flat with shade in many spots. It was a tough 21.1km run but he completed it in 2:34:18 giving him an official race finish time of 6:23:30.Melfort Tri-Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02329330827217205540noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6547106679301508456.post-11213642127125502932010-07-28T16:29:00.000-06:002012-01-05T13:40:08.954-06:00Melfort Triathlon Club on the Go! - June 2010<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 180px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MGAeqdebaes/TFeY1iFrElI/AAAAAAAAATU/Zv41XSbUM2A/s320/IMG_0833.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501033515307438674" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 180px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MGAeqdebaes/TFeY1QF5KpI/AAAAAAAAATM/Az9CMiM3p-o/s320/IMG_0860.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501033510476524178" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MGAeqdebaes/TFeY0-u-X_I/AAAAAAAAATE/ant-FVc_hWI/s320/IMG_0982.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501033505816993778" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MGAeqdebaes/TFeY0jnvczI/AAAAAAAAAS8/fdqsMOHWWiU/s320/Lyle+Bittman-+Spin+2010.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501033498538898226" />

How do you feel when you get one accomplishment done before breakfast? What about getting three accomplishments done before breakfast? Well, athletes in the Melfort Triathlon Club are getting three major things accomplished before the average person eats breakfast. These three things would include a distance swim, distance cycle and a distance run.

At the Moe's Triathlon in Saskatoon on June 7th, Lyle Bittman, Karen Hadwin, Michael Hadwin and Katie Bittman started off their triathlon racing season. Lyle and Karen competed in the short distance triathlon (500m swim, 10 km cycle, 5 km run). Lyle placed 38th in 1 hour 4 minutes while Karen placed 61st in 1 hour 12 minutes. Michael and Katie competed in the super short distance triathlon (300m swim, 6 km cycle, 2.5 run). Michael placed 4th in 38 minutes 48 seconds while Katie placed 29th in 53 minutes 6 seconds. Each of the athletes had strong performances during the race and eager to attempt upcoming triathlons this season.

Last weekend there were a series of triathlons geared for youth, junior athletes and adults. On Saturday, Curtis Glanville placed 3rd in his age category at the Kids of Steel Triathlon at Riversdale Pool in Saskatoon. Also, Keely Copeland-Hangs competed in the 10 year old category while younger sister Alexa competed in the 8 year old category. On Sunday during the junior race, Joel Glanville placed first in the 14-15 boys category in 54 minutes 23 seconds while Marissa Glanville placed 3rd in her age category in 55 minutes 3 seconds. In the sprint distance (750 m swim, 20 km cycle, 5 km run), Bill Glanville finished the race in 32rd place with a time of 1 hour 23 minutes. While in the standard distance (1500m swim, 40 km cycle, 10 km run), Lyle Bittman finished in 93th place with a time of 2 hours 57 minutes.

For these triathletes getting up very early in the morning and competing in a triathlon is totally worth it. The feeling of accomplishment following a triathlon is unbelievable. Members of the Melfort Triathlon Club will be set goals for competing in upcoming triathlons this season. If you have interested in triathlons, contact Bill Glanville or Harvey Weber.

Harvey WeberMelfort Tri-Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02329330827217205540noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6547106679301508456.post-28924929660146137342009-07-27T18:36:00.000-06:002012-01-05T13:40:56.157-06:00Regina Beach Triathlon : A Record Number of Triathletes - July 2009<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MGAeqdebaes/TFcuKH37h-I/AAAAAAAAAQk/hcNoZ4Jhe0M/s320/IMG_1043-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500916221303556066" />

The Regina Beach Triathlon set a record over the weekend with the largest number of competitors in a triathlon in Saskatchewan. There were 266 triathletes in the competition with three different distances being contested: olympic distance, sprint distance and try distance.

Lyle Bittman of the Melfort Triathlon Club was a competitor in the sprint distance finishing 9th overall out of 61 competitors. Lyle was 5th out of water after the 750 m swim with a time of 13:18, 7th fastest 20 km bike with a time of 43:56 and 28th in the hilly 5 km run with a time of 32:27. His total time, including transition times, was 1 hour 29 minutes 41 seconds.
Lyle's comment after the race was that the toughest part on his body was not having to run up 650 m hill right after the swim, but rather running down the 650 meter hill after the 20 km bike portion.

Harvey WeberMelfort Tri-Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02329330827217205540noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6547106679301508456.post-29778989824628875322009-06-07T03:20:00.001-06:002012-01-05T13:41:25.775-06:00Moe's Triathlon - June 2009<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MGAeqdebaes/TFcubn1r0CI/AAAAAAAAAQs/ZUjyLVyLmUI/s320/057%252D1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500916521941848098" />

Seven members of the Melfort Triathlon Club competed in the 2009 Bike Doctor Moe's Triathlon in Saskatoon on Sunday morning. Via text message from Bill; Bill confessed the triathlon as being very demanding. He wrote that it was pouring rain during the very long bike and the last 5 km of the run was very tough. The official results were not posted at this point in time but usually there are over 600 competitors in this race.

Victoria Argent and Harvey Weber stuck to a much shorter distance triathlon. Sounds simple? Well, here are ten ideas to help you cover those three components:

1)<span style=";font-family:";font-size:7;" > Keep your face and jaw relaxed as you run. Try chewing gum as you run; however don't bite your tongue as youare chewing the gum. That hurts!

2)<span style=";font-family:";font-size:7;" > Breathe through your mouth when you run since it is the largest passage to allow air in and out of your lungs. Breathing through your nose limits the air flow and makes you lack oxygen quickly.

3)<span style=";font-family:";font-size:7;" > Try to keep your shoulders in a stationary position while swinging your arms as you run. If your body is twisting or shoulders are moving you are wasting energy and will tire quickly.

4)<span style=";font-family:";font-size:7;" > Keep your elbows highly bent; do not have a low arm carry. High arm carriage makes your leg cadence higher and quickens your pace of running. Cadence is the back and forth movement of your legs while you run. Just incase you didn't know that fact.

5)<span style=";font-family:";font-size:7;" > Make little fists as you run but hold them closed gently. This position is the most efficient position and makes you look darn good when running in the park infront of a bunch of senior citizens.

6)<span style=";font-family:";font-size:7;" > As you swing your arms forward bring them near chin level and slightly infront of your body. This the most natural movement of the arms and again keeps the cadence of your legs at a quicker rate.

7)<span style=";font-family:";font-size:7;" > Try to be in an upright position when running; do not bend forward or lean backwards. The drills can be done in a very small space and in a very little amount of time. A quick drill session could take 10 minutes or could be extended to 40 minutes or more. The drills could be done when a runner is travelling and can't find a good place to run. They canbe done easily or very intensely depending on the runner's ability.

Running Cool down:

Make sure you cool down after your run and do a proper stretch. You will be most flexible after your run and can gain the majority of your flexible at this time.
